Hendey lathe 1887

Hendey lathe, 1892:  the first commercially-successful installation of Norton Quick-change screwcutting gearbox.

Hendey lathe of 1921 shown with relieving and taper turning attachments fitted.
Compared to the 1892 lathe of 29 years earlier, the general appearance was still distinctively Hendey, with many elements of the design notably familiar. However, the machine was more massively constructed and was, for its size and weight, of very conservative centre height.

Hendey lathe of 1922 -30 with underdrive stand and spindle-speed change gearbox. This newer model reflected the growing need for machine tools to have their own motor drive systems and more complete enclosure of moving parts. Although this design rapidly became very popular, the maker's lists continued to show cheaper, open-headstock designs for many more years.
