Long T-slotted cross slide and rear tool post. The standard cross slide on the 5-inch was shorter than the ways on which it ran and, over time, wore their centre section more than the ends. In normal use the long cross slide uses the full length of the ways - and wear is, as a consequence, both slower and more evenly distributed. The top slide was clamped down onto its mounting plate by two angled thrust pins engaging in a tapered grove on the spigot.
