This particularly fine example of a Centec 2A "Universal" (swing-table type) came to light when it was removed from a hospital's workshop in 2008. Having had only very light use, the maker's paint was intact and present was a genuine maker's raiser block and swivel-base machine vice - both surprisingly rare items Later, 3rd-party raiser blocks were made longer and could be left in place to act as the horizontal milling overarm

What must be an early head with, instead of a cross locking bolt for the quill, two slots and two closing-down bolts. One slot would have been to set the clearance, the other to provide a means of locking and unlocking the quill's position.

Instead of the usual "clock" spring to return the quill - a type that always ends up breaking  - Centec used a long-lived coil type

On the left of the saddle can be seen the final development of the table quick-feed attachment. The quick-feed attachment on early models was relatively crude and used a pinion gear with a tapered end onto which fitted a handle with its mounting boss bored with a matching taper - so allowing the operator to set it's position, or leave it loose and hanging down when not in use. A much improved version, with a circular face ratchet tightened by a knurled ring, was to eventually replace it.

Table quick-travel mechanism - gears to step-up the feed rate

Complete spindle drive system: the motor is mounted inside the cabinet stand and drives up to pulley fastened to the lower of two gearbox shafts.
The upper gearbox shaft both drives the spindle and provides, on a rear extension, a pulley to take the drive up to the vertical head.
