The wonderfully well-used 1944 LeBlond Regal 10" lathe shown in these photographs was purchased from a British Government auction sale in 1954 and, after the fitting of new headstock bearings, was pressed into daily service by Ken Lack of Sheffield producing parts for Vintage Scott motorcycles. By 1998 the apron controls had become unacceptably sloppy so all the relevant holes were re-bushed and the shafts hard-chromed and reground; no gears or other parts needed replacing. The original motor also died during the same year and was replaced with a modern unit which, despite its famous name, ran far less smoothly than the old one; that problem was fixed by mounting it on four car exhaust rubber hangers.
A contemplative pipe - some of the older generation would claim it to be the most essential of engineering accessories - lies amidst the detritus of a busy workshop.
