Because a conventional fixed steady cannot be used when working with wood, on an ornamental lathe a special boring collar is provided. This has a ring of pre-formed, tapered holes carried on a disc that can be rotated into position. Its use is as a steady, when boring into the end of a job, and must be provided with the lathe when new to ensure absolute accuracy of alignment.
