Smallest of the "modern" Dean, Smith and Grace lathes, the Model 13-1 could be had with a capacity between centres of 30, 42 or 48 inches. A popular machine - it's our most-requested one for manuals and other literature - it could be had with a choice of three speed ranges for the 15/8" (41 mm) bore spindle. The standard offering gave 12 forward speeds (with 6 in reverse) of 17.5 to 710 r.p.m., 24.5 to 1000 r.p.m and 35 to 1400 r.p.m. At extra cost, a high-speed range could be provided, this giving 18 forward speeds (and 9 in reverse) of 17.5 to 1120 r.p.m., 24.5 to 1600 r.p.m. and 35 to 2240 r.p.m. Power came from a choice of two three-phase motors - 5 and 7.5 h.p. both running at 1400 r.p.m. - though doubtless the maker's would have fitted alternatives, including 2-speed types - to a customer's particular requirements. The real swing over the 11.75-inch (298 mm) wide V and flat-way bed was 13.5 inches (343 mm) and, with its guard removed, over the saddle of 8.25 inches 209 mm). Equipped with a 30-inch between centres bed, the lathe weighed 4,928 lbs (2,235 kg). Fuller details can be found below.
