All early Wabeco lathes (and millers) could be factory fitted - or retrofitted - with a kit that enabled them to be driven, through a supplied interface, by a standard PC.
The well-established system of stepper motors driving through toothed belts was used but, because the standard feed screws were retained, and not replaced by zero-backlash ball screws, the ordinary hand controls remained operative - a most useful feature.

The way to do it - the 6000 Series lathe has its cross-feed stepper motor mounted out of the way at the back of the slide - and the leadscrew drive neatly concealed.

Possibly not the way to do it - though lots do. The cross-feed stepper motor mounted on a vulnerable, overhung bracket at the front of the lathe.
