The owner, in Australia, writes: Some background to the Sheraton "9-inch" lathe Serial No. 528. It was purchased in 2019 from a gentleman in his 70s - he was selling due to retirement and moving, his father having purchased the lathe new around 1960. Apart from the paint being quite chipped in places and multi touch-ups of differing colours it's original. I routinely cleaned it, gave it a coat of paint and dismantled some parts to check for wear - and was pleasantly surprised when it came to the apron which, after a quick rinse in kerosene, it looked like new, a situation that reflective the condition of the whole lathe.
I'm so pleased to not have an ex school machine; Sheraton lathes were most popular in government institutions - as you correctly state in your text - along with Hercus.
I'm not happy with the wall mounted drive on my lathe; I suspect the owner mounted it this way to save bench space. As I am missing the main "over-centre" tensioning arm, I'm unable to mount it on the bench.
