The headstock casting was a particularly massive affair with an enclosed top and the minimum of flex-inducing openings in its sides and ends; it was fastened to the bed by a total of nine bolts, with two adjusting screws for alignment.

The spindle ran in three sets of grease-sealed, attention-free super-precision bearings - double-row cylindrical rollers at each end and a pair of angular-contact type as additional support in the middle.

The 52mm (2-inch) bore dynamically-balanced headstock spindle was beautifully-made from a high-tensile, alloy-steel forging; it was heat-treated, ground over its entire length (including the gear splines) and assembled in a dedicated-for-the-purpose room.
