Victoria (Excel) Grinding Machines

Manufactured by the Victoria Machine Tool Company of Victoria Road in Willesden, London N.W.10. the "Excel" range of grinding machines was current from the very late 1940s until the late 1960s. "Excel" branding was used by the controlling B. Elliott Machinery Group - whose companies included Victoria, Cardiff, Progress, Invicta, Snow and others - to market a number of their lathes, specialised tool and jig millers, miniature jig-borers-cum-drillers, small jig borers, precision filing & sawing machines, tool & cutter and surface grinders & other machine tools from the 1930s until the 1960s. The name tended to indicated that the various products so labelled would be of better-than-average quality - and usually directed towards a specialised segment of the market.
While competing firms such as Jones and Shipman in Leicester and Churchill in Manchester offered a vast range of types, those branded Excel were limited in variety being restricted to one semi-universal and a number of surface types. However, though small, the range was of excellent quality with users reporting smooth-running machines of high accuracy and great reliability.
While the standard surface grinders, the models No. 2 and the 3 Series had been phased out by the early 1960s, the vertical spindle No. 1 and the No. 5 tool and cutter continued to the end of that decade - the No. 1 being slightly modified and re-listed as the Elliott 5-10. In place of the older Excel models, Elliot bought in more up-to-date machines - probably imported from Spain - the Models
20 x 8,  8/18, 6040 and the UK-manufactured 618 and 1018 by Snow and the Burdett 24 x 8 and 24 x 12.
