An amazingly original and complete Dalton 4 Model B-4, almost certainly the most popular and now most common Dalton lathe. This 7.25-inch swing by around 24-inches between centres example, which looks to be a 1920 model, has even retained the (originally very expensive) overhead drive countershaft.
With their tall countershafts, these lathes should be bolted to the floor, and extreme care taken when moving them. The enormous mass concentrated at the headstock end makes the lathe very likely to tip over - not forwards or backwards, but to the left. Indeed, so light is the tailstock end that it often possible to lift this with a couple of fingers.
