Seldom found, the Childs 6" x 12" wood-turning lathe was of the simplest possible design with bed and headstock cast as-one and a spindle running in light, parallel bronze bearings lubricated though open oil holes. A slot down the centre line of the bed provided the means by which the tool rest and tailstock were clamped down, the latter with 0.5-inch diameter fine-pitch thread to drive the spindle.
Like the contemporary Childs milling machine, the lathe carried a row of four decorative ribs, similar to those also employed on some models of Dunlap and Craftsman branded lathes during the 1930s..
