Myford ML2 Capstan

It appears that either a single example or a small batch of this highly unusual version of the Myford Super 7B lathe was put into production by the factory, each with a capacity of 64 inches between centres.
The reason for its manufacture was unfortunately not recorded by the factory, and the writer was unable to discover from them anything about its creation.
Quite different in form to that of the ordinary Super 7, the bed was formed as a straight beam with no gap, though the ways were identical to those of the ordinary model. It seems that the drive system was also modified with power to the spoindle provided by a variable-speed DC spindle-drive motor. Also, at the tailstock end of the leadscrew, another DC motor (by Paravlux) was connected to a reduction gearbox by a knurled sleeve clutch to provide an infinitely-variable-speed drive to the carriage. In addition, at the headstock end of the bed, the leadscrew was fitted with a simple dog clutch, like that available for the ML10, but with engagement via a knurled sleeve rather than a handle. The leadscrew was also equipped (because of its extreme length) with two detachable supporting brackets.
In 2026, after many decades of puzzlement over this most unusual creation, an owner made contact, having just purchased an example. The serial number of his lathe (and the only one known) is SK156105, placing it as having been made around 1980 and complete with paperwork suggesting that it was sold, around 1990,  to a person in Suffolk by LRE Machinery, Warrington, for £1000 + VAT. If so, this must have been a fraction of its original cost, for the bed casting alone must have, even for a short run of half a dozen, been staggeringly expensive..

The knurled rings engage a dog clutch at the headstock end of the bed. Note the crude stamping of "SPECIAL"
