Manufactured at by Harcross Engineering, first at their Herke Works in Lyon Road, Hersham, Surry and then on the Pottington Industrial Estate, in Barnstable, Devon, the Industrial-class Herke tapping machine appears to have been introduced during the 1930s and continued to be built into the late 1970s. Three versions were produced, the Mk. 1, Mk. 2 and Mk. 3. Early models were built as bench-only models with the Mk. 2 and Mk. 3 offered as both deep-throat and floor-standing types. Normally fitted with motors of  1/3 and 1/2 h.p, by the end of production the larger pair of the final four offered, the VS2B and VS2P, could be had with a 3/4 h.p. and the ability to tap holes up to 1/2" in diameter.
