York Lathe

Mystery surrounds the origins of the very rare but rather well-made little "York" lathe - though it does bear a passing resemblance to the 1.75" x 6.5" "Wizard" and "Lane Micro"  made by Lane & Son of Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham. The York entered a crowded market with, amongst others, the likes of Flexispeed, PerrisJason, Cowells, Wakefield and Haighton competing for custom and few can have been made. Some versions were clearly marked, with the York name cast into the bed, while others (absolutely identical) were completely bereft of any identification.
If you have a York machine tool of any kind, the writer would be interested to hear from you.

An enthusiastic owner has fitted this York with backgear. The number of pulley grooves has been reduced from 4 to 3 to make from for the headstock spindle gears and, at the back, the other gears are carried on a an assembly bolted to the back of the bed. The cap screws at the rear of the headstock bearings are not original but part of a repair.

An original York countershaft unit - simple and effective. The 4-step pulley will be the original

All set up and ready to use
