SR80 Lathe - Denmark

Still in production (2019, at the latest report), the 80 mm centre height by 400 mm between centres SR80 is built in Denmark. The slim, backgeared headstock assembly resembles that used on the 1960s Emco 3000 model with the 17 mm bore spindle carrying an overhung 4-step pulley at its left-hand end.
Of a simple but robust type, the drive system consists of an upright countershaft fitted with a ball-bearing spindle carrying a 4-step pulley overhung on its left-hand end and driven by a matching pulley on the motor. Overhung on the end of the spindle's left-hand end was a 2-step pulley, this being driven by a matching one on the countershaft - the arrangement providing four low speeds and four high. Equipped with a threaded nose and a No. 2 Morse taper socket, the spindle (when driven by a 1400 r.p.m. motor) has speeds that run from 95 rpm through 150, 205, 275, 380, 590, 820 to a top speed of 1100 rpm - a range that might be criticised for being rather too fast at the bottom end, yet not quite fast enough at the top.
Equipped with V and flat ways, the bed carries a conventional carriage assembly with the cross-slide positioned exactly in the middle of the equal-length wings. Surprisingly, in view of its straightforward design, the lathe has a proper screwcutting gearbox, though as the box has only a single tumbler, the range of pitches it can generate is limited. However,  supplied with each lathe is a set of changewheel (25, 30, 35, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 90, 100 and 120t) that extend the threading range to cover metric pitches from 0.2 to 3.0 mm and inch from 6 to 352 t.p.i. Some versions appear to have been bereft of a changewheel cover - whilst others used a large aluminium casting - a part, again, not dissimilar to that employed on the Emco 3000.
Able to be set over on its baseplate for the turning of slight tapers, the tailstock has a barrel locked by a proper compression fitting and equipped with a No. 1 Morse taper socket.
If you own an SR80, or have sales catalogues or a Handbook,  the writer will be very pleased to hear from you.
