There is one thing - among very few - that you cannot accuse South Bend of, and that is failing to offer an adequate range of useful accessories for their very popular 9-inch lathe. While today, on the second-hand market, some are relative common, others such as the hardened and tapped faceplates are not, and one can only conclude that, when in production, few can have been sold.
What are the essential accessories that make lathe work easier to complete? The argument might rage for days but, in addition to the usual maker-supplied accessories of a faceplate, drive-plate and Morse centres, the following will be a good starting point for most regular work: an accurate 3-jaw chuck; an independent 4-jaw chuck (preferably of the "half-depth" body type; tailstock drill chuck; tailstock rotating centre and a tailstock sliding die holder for threading work; a selection of high-quality drill bits; a quick-set toolpost with at least four regular-type toolholders and parting and boring holders; as wide a selection of turning and boring tools as can be afforded; two bed-mounted carriage stop, one with a micrometer dial and a second with multiple rotating stops. After those items have been accumulated a steady rest would be handy (the travelling rest is seldom used) as would a thread-dial indicator and a set of collets.
