The text in the pages is German but here, in English, is a brief summary of the machine's design and general capabilities.
Production of effective cutting tools results from them having professionally ground cutting edges - and this was a decisive fact when Schreyer further developed their automatic and manual universal tool grinding machine, the AWS4.
Similar in design and capability as the Jones & Shipman Models 310, 1014 and 1314, by employing the comprehensive  range of accessories offered, the AWS4 become a highly versatile and suitable for the precise grinding of all types of cutting tools, such as straight and spiral flutes, reamers, threading tools, the main and secondary cutting edges on knife heads and ceramic tools, milling cutters up to module 8, lathe turning tools - as well as for many other jobs such as surface and internal grinding.
Two main features of the ASW-4 were the provision of automatic working - a very useful function when a series of the same tool needed to be ground - and the ability to grind individual tools both automatically and by hand. The powerful, undivided and therefore vibration-free design of the box stand - and the separate arrangement of long and cross slides  - guaranteed high precision and a fine surface finish. The longitudinal slide could be adjusted, without play, using gib-strip screws and moved with ease and sensitivity on a combination of cross-roller bearings and hardened and ground prism guides. The longitudinal slide supported the sliding table, which was driven automatically by a 'mechanical rocker' transmission. The table speed was infinitely adjustable and controlled by a multi-disc clutch. By using a hand lever to engage a rack-and-pinion drive, the longitudinal slide could also be manually operated. The advantage of a mechanical drive was that it allowed an absolutely precise reversal of the grinding table, something that a hydraulic system could not provide.  The cross slide was guided by a wide and solid flat guide and at the same time supported the round-column support that held the motor and grinding head. The nuts of the cross and height feed screws were both split and could be adjusted to take out play.
The height support - together with the grinding head and drive motor - could be rotated horizontally by 360° and was equipped with a swivelling grinding spindle head able to be swivelled by 360° in the vertical plane; by this means clearance angles could be precisely adjusted by pivoting the spindle head when the tooth to be ground was at the centre of the axis. For cutter heads - and especially for conical grinding work - this spindle head offered the advantage that the clearance angle remained constant over the entire length of the tooth. In addition, the eccentrically-arranged mounting hole on the swivelling grinding spindle head allowed a useful expansion of the grinding area in height and depth and, when set vertically, permitted surface grinding to be undertaken..
