Manufactured by the Jude General Engineering Works of Bangalore (and marketed through the Perfect Machine Tool Company Pvt. Ltd) the "Savna" capstan lathe was a simple but rugged (it weighed 580 kg), hand-operated machine with a 106 mm centre height. The 125 mm diameter six-station capstan head rotated on angular contact bearings and was fitted with automatic indexing on the return stoke. Fitted as standard was a cut-off/forming slide that could, most usefully, be operated either by screw or lever. In its place, at extra cost, could be mounted a compound slide with lever operation of cross and longitudinal movements, or one with all screw-feeds and fitted with micrometer dials and vernier scales - though the latter was not intended to turn the lathe into a second-operation machine, there being no tailstock listed amongst the optional extras.
Made from a high-quality, chrome-nickel steel the headstock spindle had a relatively enormous bore of 2" (53 mm), a M68 x 3 mm pitch screwed spindle nose and turned in (imported) high-precision angular contact and ball races - the front race being 100 mm in diameter. The maximum through-collet capacity was 32 mm and in a stepped collet 125 with closure by a quick-action lever.
Very heavily built, the 470 x 170 mm cast-iron stand (with drawers and a locking cabinet) held a 2-speed 0.75/1.5 h.p. motor (with a dynamically balanced rotor) that drove the spindle by a V-belt running over 3-step pulley - the six speeds generated ranging from 300 to 2800 r.p.m. in forward and reverse. At extra cost a 9-speed drive could be fitted, obtained by a using a 3-speed motor..
