Sadly no more, Messrs. Frederick Pollard and Company Ltd. were based at their Corona Works in Leicester. Having formerly been a founding partner with Frank Shipman in A. A. Jones and Shipman, in 1911 Pollard left to found his own company. Almost immediate success was followed by a rapid expansion of the original  works between 1915 and 1934 together with further developments in the 1940s. Over the decades a huge range of machines was manufactured including tiny, very high-speed, bench machines capable of drilling microscopic "SWG" holes (standard wire gauge) down to 0.001" diameter and a wide range of ordinary bench and pillar "sensitive" types for general workshop use. For employment in factory and production plants standard heads could be arranged into multi-head assemblies and fitted together on a common cast-iron base - or arranged in special ways for the simultaneous manual or entirely automatic drilling of components. Large, heavy-duty multi-spindle types were also listed, these invariably being set up to special order for production drilling of such items as engine blocks and pipe flanges. For heavier industries Pollard offered huge 20-ton and larger one-off examples for such as shipyards and steel works together with numerous individually constructed types to meet a customer's special requirements If there was a drill type required, Pollard almost certainly offered it - or could design and make it.
Today, thousands of Pollard "Corona" drills remain in use, some dating back to the very first years of production, a testimony to their quality of construction and sound design. Of the ordinary types made, the V-belt-driven 1-AX, 2-AX, 1-EX, 2-EX, 1-FX, 2-FX and 2-CX probably survive in the greatest numbers, these being made as floor-standing types with both round and heavier rectangular, cast-iron box-type columns and also for bench mounting. Less common, though still found on active service, are the direct drive Types 13-AX, 13-FX, 13-AY, 13-FY, 15-AX and 15-AY.
As the range of Pollard drill made is so extensive, additional pages covering earlier and later years of production will be added to this section as time permits..

Frederick Pollard.
