Story of Wilhelm von Pittler

A gifted young engineer is working to solve certain technical questions about the lathe and is organising, as a long-term activity, the manufacture of spares and accessories. If you own a Pattern B lathe, and would like to be put in touch, please contact the author.
Castings already produced are the cruciform frame and curved spoke pulley for the final (1926) revision of the B2 overhead drive, and patterns are now complete for the standard brackets to carry the overhead rail. The pattern for the B2 drilling spindle, as well as the milling head - which is  same basic casting - will be made up soon. Drawings have been started to manufacture the Pittler universal cutting frame, though will not require any castings. at all.
Screwcutting on Pittler lathes depends upon matched sets of worms and wheels which, for many years, have been in short supply. These are to be one of the first items to be produced - however, if you are in a rush to make your own you might like to know that the B2 used a set of 17 worms and wheels (able to cut 27 pitches) of 20 diametral pitch, with a pressure angle of 14.5 degrees for wheels over 30T, and 20 degrees for wheels under this.
The single start worm was of 1.026" O/D with a pitch of 0.164", the five, ten, and fifteen start worms were of the same helix angle (different to the single start) but further data is only relevant to the ten-start worm, of 2.880" O/D with a pitch of 0.1853.
Further information is now ready - and should clear up the question of numbers of teeth per set and the pressure angles of the worms themselves.
Interestingly, all Pattern B lathes appear to have been held together throughout with Whitworth fasteners.

This 3.5" x 11" model was available as the plain-turning Pattern B or the screwcutting Pattern B2. In the latter case, when fitted to the illustrated self-contained pedestal stand it could be specified as the No. 1 lathe or, fitted with an automatic disengage to the power feed, as the No. 2.
A longer bed version of the lathe was also produced (see below), fitted to a superior treadle-drive stand. In this form, with 17" capacity between centres and fitted with screwcutting and automatic disengage to the saddle drive, it was known as the
Pattern B2 No. 3.
If a greater capacity was required the lathe could be specified with a 5" centre height, but in a plain turning form only, as the Pattern B3
More written information on the fascinating and versatile Pittler lathes to follow:-
If anybody has original copies of the sales brochures for these lathes, the author would like to negotiate sight of them.
