Using the Atlas 12-inch wood lathe as its basis, the Brohead-Garrett J-112 was fitted to a welded sheet-metal stand and equipped with a mechanical variable-speed drive system. Spindle speed was controlled by a handwheel, mounted immediately below the headstock, the turning of which opened and closed a pair of pulleys to vary the ratio between them.
