CST (Astra) L2 Junior & L4/L5 Senior
The CST "Universal" miller was sold originally in the UK by Scot-Urquhart of London and badged as an "Astra". It remains in production in Italy by CST of Milan http://www.cst-snc.it/ with the marketing company now Scot Urquhart/Hartle MTE Ltd. Arthur Street, Lakeside, Redditch, Worcestershire, B98 8JZ Phone: 01527 517565. CST began life in 1961 as a sub-contracting machine shop before moving on to the production of radial-arm drills then a small range of simple, manually-operated milling machines. The company still produces the simple millers but also includes in its product range a number of automatic and CNC controlled models. The machines most frequently encountered in the UK are the L2 and very similar but larger and better specified L4 and L5 "Senior" models with, amongst other improvements, longer tables and two speed motors; an L1 is also listed but seldom seen. The basic "L" model is a simple horizontal miller, with the motor drive contained within the casting of the body. A handle, which protrudes though the left-hand side of the casing, allows the motor-table clamp to be slackened and the table raised to change the drive belt's position. The miller is normally supplied with a plain vertical head, illustrated below, bereft of either quick or fine feeds. A more useful belt-driven powered head with a rapid-drilling quill and a No.2 Morse taper and four speeds from 620 to 1850 rpm is also available, but as it costs very nearly as much as the basic machine it is consequently a rare fitting. Thee same head also fits the "Zero" and "Zeromatic" millers. The L2 has a table of 13" x 4.375" with a ratchet-operated rise and fall to the knee. Four spindle speeds are provided of 620, 900, 1260 and 1850 rpm. and the 1" diameter arbor fitted with a No2 Morse taper socket. A "Junior" model, without the overarm and designed for simple stub milling (but capable of being fitted with the simple vertical head) was also listed and is illustrated below. The L4 "Senior" had a larger 16" x 5.125" table, whilst the L5 also had a proper screw feed
