Mk. 1 Wyvern on the original style of stand with a heavy plinth under headstock and a simple leg beneath the tailstock end of the bed.
Simple but robust double-wall apron with lever selection of power sliding or surfacing feeds with a flick-in-and-out lever protruding from the lower edge.
No skimping with plastic or screen-printed speed and feeds plates; on the Mk. 1 Wyvern they were in solid cast metal.
Not a huge range of pitches and feeds were available before the changewheel setting had to be altered but entirely adequate for the average workshop.
The 6-speed, oil-bath speed-change gearbox, and the starting and stopping of the lathe, was controlled by a large lever mounted on the front face of the stand immediately below the headstock.; the lever worked through a Herbert double-friction clutch and it was unnecessary to stop the machine before changing all but the headstock-mounted backgear speeds. The clutch doubled as a brake and the spindle could be brought to rest from high speeds very quickly, even when a heavy job was being turned.
