Dating from 1860 to 1900 this lathe is currently in South Africa. Pointers to its antiquity include: outboard support for the spindle thrust bearing; a rear-mounted power shaft to provide power cross feed; crank handles with horn or wooden grips on the compound slide rest; very coarse pitch backgears and a narrow, lightweight apron. However, the plain bronze spindle bearings are the draw-in type and the tailstock barrel locked by a proper split compression bolt - both features hinting that this was a machine of better-than-normal quality.
