Another very early Seneca Falls Star, a foot-treadle model that both lacks a patent date on the bed and with some parts of rather more primitive construction than the example from the 1890s in the Seneca Falls museum. This well-preserved machine retains its original full set of changewheels, faceplate, centers, drive dogs and chucks (although the original and now rare 3-jaw, non-geared scroll chuck was donated to the Museum). Still in good shape and regular use, the lathe is fitted with an antique Skinner 4-jaw chuck (with very dangerous, protruding adjusting screws), that bears a patent date of November 17th , 1891 together with a Cushman tailstock chuck patented December 24th , 1872.
Fitted originally with a difficult-to-disengage, positive-drive, toothed-type power-feed clutch on the apron (the awkwardness of the arrangement being compounded by having turn the control knob in the same direction that it was rotating to release it) the owner replaced this with a quick-release lever.
