Schaublin Type 53N

Second of the Schaublin Series 50 millers, the Type 52 was the immediate forerunner to the better-known and heavily modified Types 53 and 53N. Advertised for a time during the mid 1940s it was marketed alongside the Type 51 - a machine it closely resembled in many respects but with a somewhat greater capacity and the table-feed controls relocated from the left-hand side to the front  of the knee. Similar in general layout to the other Series 50 models, the main column, drive system, knee and table were conventional enough (though massively built and to a high specification) but the head was possibly unique. Carried on the end of a sliding horizontal cylinder 240 mm in diameter (that could also be rotated and locked at 15° intervals), the bevel-gear driven head was fitted with a National Standard  Nose, 1 3/4"-No. 44, DIN 2079, VSM 33930-31. In and out head travel was 300 mm and rotation possible through 360°. In order to accommodate horizontal milling, a pair of 50 mm diameter ram supports pulled out from the face of the head with the cutter arbor (supplied in a number of sizes), being driven from the horizontal spindle nose.
Offering a decent increase in size and travel in comparison with the Type 51 and fitted rather inconveniently with a handwheel at its left-hand side only), the 850 x 240 mm table had four 12 mm wide T-slots, 550 mm of longitudinal travel, 180 mm across and 430 mm vertically - the figures remaining unaltered when used under power. The eighteen rates of ordinary feed ranged from 20 to 145 mm/min longitudinally and in traverse and 20 to 145 mm/min vertically. Rapids were fitted to the horizontal feeds only at a range set between 240 and 1740 mm/min.
Driven by a 2-speed 2.4/3 h.p. motor running at 1500 and 300 r.p.m., eighteen spindle speeds were provided that spanned 45 to 16000 r.p.m.
Standing some 1800 mm high, the Schaublin Type 52 was around 1430 mm deep from the tip of the cross-feed handwheel to the back and weighed 1200 kg.
