Very early plain-bearing spindle machine with a domed headstock cover that reached right down to the centreline of the bearings and, instead of being bolted in place, simply rested in its recess .
The straight-sided cast-aluminium changewheel cover of the first L5 lathe.
With the changewheel cover removed the single mounting lug for the cover can be seen just below and in front of the headstock spindle. The 3-speed leadscrew gearbox allowed a very simple non-compound gear train to be used even for fine feeds.
The clutch-operating arm was connected to a full-length operating bar that slid through a bracket supported in a bracket at the tailstock end of the bed.
On early lathes the tailstock barrel clamp was positioned horizontally over the top of the casting. The bracket bolted to the end of the bed supported the end of the clutch-operating bar.
