Shown on this page is an interesting small horizontal miller from Dixi, one size bigger than normal and dating from a time before the Company became a limited, joint stock (incorporated) organisation. Most horizontal machines of this size, being used for only delicate work, do not bother with an overarm but in this case Dixi incorporated a supporting socket for one by  forming an extension to the casting over the front spindle bearings.
Movements of the table were 76 mm on the X-axis, 47 mm on the Y and  52 mm vertically (Z) with the latter slide, to eliminate backlash,  pulled against its feedscrew by a counterweight inside the column (when equipped with lever feed). Note that the lever used to apply the vertical movement was all-steel - and without the warmer-to-hold synthetic grip of the other two. The spindle took 10mm collets and, to give a greater vertical capacity, a raiser block could be fitted between base and top section.. The machine shown on this page was bought originally by the Movado watch company in Bienne, Switzerland (confirmed by a small stamp is on the back of the column) and later used in a factory, near London, where a Mr. K.C. Walker made watch cases. The rotary table is a rare Dixi item.
