Cabo No. 2 Tool & Cutter Grinder

A catalogue-come-handbook is available for the Cabo

Appearing, at a glance, to be a typical hand-operated surface grinder of the type made by Capco, and Eagle, the Cabo was an altogether different and rather cleverly designed machine. Carried on top of a floor-standing, cast-iron column was a head unit able to be turned through 360° horizontally and carrying two spindle: the first was fixed in the horizontal position - and so able to maintain a precise relationship with the table - while the second was carried in a housing able to be swivelled through 360°. At the other end of the casting - and locked so that it swivelled with the second head - was a 2-speed, 3-phase motor fitted with a flat-belt pulley and carried on a slide-in-and-out column. Needless to say, in order to drive the two spindles, separate belts had to be mounted. Fitted with the standard pulleys, speeds of 4000 and 8000 r.p.m were provided and, with optional larger-diameter ones intended for smaller work and internal grinding, 8,000 and 16,000 r.p.m. The electrical system was neatly built-in with the remote controls and fuses carried in a locker on the left-hand face of the stand. Switches were mounted on a plate at the front of the machine clamped to top section of the casting that carried the table elevation screw. Three buttons were provided: on the left to control the powered universal head; in the middle to operate a no-volt safety release contactor for the main motor and on the right to switch on either an electromagnetic chuck or the lamp.
Able to be moved through 450 mm horizontally on roller-chain SKF bearings, 130 mm in traverse on ball bearings and elevated by a worn drive through 200 mm the 170 x 690 mm table was hand-driven and able to mount an auxiliary 115 x 550 mm table that swivelled about its vertical axis.
A wide range of accessories was offered including: a table-mounted swivel-base head, intended for cylindrical work, fitted with a 1400 r.p.m. 0.1 h.p. motor; tailstocks with fixed and moveable spindles; a plain dividing head with interchangeable index plates; a bed-mounted raiser block with a single, central T-slot;  a special attachment to grind disc cutters; double-swivel machine vices; magnetic chuck; special, finely-made 3-jaw chucks able to run at up to 20,000 r.p.m.; a dust extraction unit, and various arbors, distance pieces and faceplates - all are shown below.
